This 2011 SNMS Race was recorded in High Definition video. This benefits you in three ways:
- The Standard Definition version comes out better than with my previous camera
- You have the option of purchasing this event in High Definition on Bluray disc. (+$5)
- Most Bluray players will upscale SD discs to HD for viewing, which is almost as good as the Bluray version without the extra cost!
Your order will default to Standard Definition unless you select Hi Def (BluRay) from the Resolution option box above.
The following race recap provided by SNMS track announcer, Bryan Hulbert.
(Las Cruces, NM – September 24, 2011) A full night of racing set up as 81 cars filled the pits of the Southern New Mexico Speedway for the next to last weekend of the 2011 regular season with the Barnett Harley Davison USRA Modifieds and Legends of the Southwest set to end their championship run. Joined by the Sisbarro Super Trucks, Rick’s Performance Center Street Stocks, and the Hornets added another page to their season with all three support classes ready to settle their season on October 1st.
Heat races began with Super Trucks with John Delph and Mike Day earing wins. The Legend heats went to Allen Gattis, Vince Malone, and Don Reynolds while the Hornets saw Ricky Christian and Tuni Molina take heat wins. The Street Stock heat belonged to Scott Sullivan, Jerrad Warhurst, and Stevie Rey as the Modified heats went to Mercedes Harris, Chad Falco, Rick Ortega, and Terry Tipton.
The Super Trucks ran the only dash of the night with Rick Jackson taking the win.
The Sisbarro Super Trucks entered the track for their 20 lap feature event with the 41 of John Delph jumping to the race lead with the 2a of Kenny Alons giving chase. Working on the back bumper of the 41, Alons would soon find himself being challenged by the 50 of Rick Jackson. Pulling low for the slide job, the 2a would clear Delph for the lead but the 41 would quickly turn down the track to pull back even for the top spot while Rick Jackson took his truck even lower to make it three wide with the 50 of Jackson taking the lead. Charging from the eighth starting spot, the 44 of Christy Georges would take over third as the battle up front would see the 50 of Jackson overshoot the high line; handing the lead to Kenny Alons. With the lead in hand, the 2a would work on pulling away but the caution would put Rick Jackson and Christy Georges right on his back bumper. Back to green with 11 laps to run, the fight for the lead was on as the 44 of Georges dove low on Alons but with no success. Working back into each other’s tire tracks it was a waiting game for someone to slip up as the battle on the Speedway was for fourth between John Delph and Lloyd Duffy with Chevy Young sneaking by for the position. Back to the front of the field with five laps to run and Georges began working the bottom on Alons. Pulling side by side by side with the 2a, Georges would work for several laps before finally securing the lead with two laps to run. Moving back to the high line, Christy Georges would go unchallenged to the win. Kenny Alons, Rick Jackson, Lloyd Duffy, and Chevy Young rounded out the top five.
On to the Legends for their final 20 laps of the regular season with the 45 of Ricky Rodriguez taking the lead on lap one. Working the bottom of the track, the 902 of Mike Zuloaga would take a shot at the lead but would nearly spin his 902 as up high the 45 would also get sideways allowing the 21c of Kevin Buntyn the race lead. Buntyn’s lead however would be short lived as the 21c spun in the middle of the track. With everyone able to make their way by the 21c would re-fire to avoid the caution as the lead now belonged to the 902 for just a moment as Don Reynolds put his 3d into the race lead. Picking his way through the field, the 96r of Dusty Riggs would work on getting into the top five. Working on the 902 of Mike Zuloaga, the 96r was not alone as the 85m of Vince Malone put his name into the mix to take the fight three wide. Making their way by the 902, Malone and Riggs would go to work on Curt Barnett for third. Working high and low, Riggs would shoot into third on the bottom of the Speedway and quickly go after Robert Sheppard for second before the caution waved with 10 laps to run. Racing again, the 96r would take second with the 85m of Vince Malone going to work on Sheppard for third. Pulling away from the field, the 3d of Don Reynolds would look to sail away but the high line was coming in for Dusty Riggs as the 96r worked on building up his momentum. Going side by side the 96r would take over the top spot with Reynolds looking to take it back but the caution would wave for the lapped car of Tristan Gattis. Back to green, the 96r would have to protect the low line as Reynolds was glued to his back bumper. As the 96r and 3d working each other for the lead, the 43 of Curt Barnett would work into third on the restart. Working the high line the 43 would run out of laps as the checkered flag waved for Dusty Riggs. Don Reynolds would take second; securing the 2011 Southern New Mexico Speedway track championship while Curt Barnett, Allen Gattis, and Keith Schmidt rounded out the top five.
The Hornets hit the track with the 95 of Tuni Molina rocketing into the race lead but a caution would force the complete restart. Back to green and the 95 again shot to a huge lead as the cars to watch started a ¼ lap back from the field. Making the biggest moves to start things off were the 47 for Jeff Maag and the 241 of David Jay Jr. Working into the top ten in less than ten laps on the 20 car field the mid race caution would have to wave as cars spun on the back straight but a hard impact into the wall by the 15 of Jonathan Moore would be the cause for the yellow flag. On the hook the 15 would get pulled to the pits with the diver confirmed ok. With the cautions taking a large chunk of time out of the race, the restart would see the field go from 10 to go to 5 to go. Out of all the mayhem the car making moves now would be the 88 of Mike Mays. After starting with the back pack, the 88 would waste no time fighting into second as the fight for fourth would see the 47 of Jeff Maag take the spot before the caution waved. Back to green with 2 to go, the air cooled engine in the 95 was starting to lose some power but it would not be enough for Mays make a charge as the bug driven by Tuni Molina took the win. Mike Mays, Jeff Maag, Gary Mays, and Rudy Tarin rounded out the top five.
The Rick’s Performance Center Street Stocks rolled to the track for twenty laps and immediately went three wide with the 81 of David Coy wasting no time as the Santa Teresa, New Mexico racer shot from eighth to the lead in less than two laps. Taking over second the 48t of Paul Telles Jr. would begin going to work on Coy as the caution waved. Back to green with 18 laps to run, the champions were on the move as the 48 of Mike Rosales worked into third with Ozzie Noder and Sean Bowman battle it out as upfront the 81 of David Coy would see his lead go away with a flat right front tire; handing the top spot to the 48t. Batting for second, the 48 of Rosales and 00 of Stevie Rey both ran the bottom line of the Speedway with the 48 going around into the infield, the track stayed green with the battle up front coming to the 00 as the 48t would see a comfortable advantage close up in a hurry as Telles nearly collided with a lapped car. Slamming on the brakes, the 48t would not be able to hold off Stevie Rey as the 00 took the race lead before the caution waved with less than 10 laps to run. Back to green, the 00 would pull away as the 88 of Ozzie Noder worked on the 48t of Paul Telles Jr. Unable to get the run, the battle between the 15x and the 88 would continue with Sean Bowman taking the spot as up front it seemed that everything was going Stevie’s way but the 00 would not see the checkered flag as the car quit coming to the white flag; handing the win to the 48t of Paul Telles Jr. Sean Bowman, Ozzie Noder, Jack Skillin, and Mike Rosales round out the top five.
In their final 30 laps of the regular season, the Barnett Harley Davidson USRA Western Modifieds went green with the 88 of Travis Tipton taking the early race lead. On the move from seventh, the 99 of Terry Tipton would waste no time getting into second before the caution waved for the 22 of John Calvert. Back underway and the 99 of Tipton would steal the race lead with the 555 of Chad Falco taking the runner up spot. Running high on the track, the car on the move was Stormy Scott. Taking the battle for third three wide with Travis Tipton and Jimmy Ray, the tenth starting 2s would pull out side by side with Ray before the caution waved again for the spun 10 of Roger Owens. As the field went under caution, the 44 of Christy Georges would suddenly lose power on her machine. Getting the push into the hot pit, the crew would get the 44 running again just as the field began forming into the Delaware Double File Restart with 23 laps to run. Back to green and the battle of the lead was three wide with the 2s up top, the 99 to the middle, and the 9 to the bottom with Stormy Scott’s 2s getting the top spot but not without the 9 of Jimmy Ray fighting hard on the inside line. Able to build his momentum, the 2s would begin to pull away as the Jones family began working through the field. Working into the top five, the 121 of Holly Jones would work into third as her father Royal Jones worked on Travis Tipton for fourth. Contact from the 88 as Jones worked by would kick Royal sideways but it would not be enough for the 88 to get back by as the 131 went back to work on running down the 121. Battling to the inside line on Holly, the 131 of Royal Jones would take over third as the 2s of Stormy Scott pulled to a huge half-track advantage. Using lapped traffic to his advantage, the battle for second would soon be between the 9 of Ray and the 131 of Jones. Battling in and out of slower traffic, the 9 and the 131 would swap second over and over again with less than ten laps to go with the 131 getting the spot before the caution waved for the 23 of Kevin Clark. Back to green with eight laps to run, the 2s would immediately run away as Jones and Ray continued their battle for second before the yellow lights blinked back on for the 5 of Kenny Medina. Underway again with less than five laps to run the 44 of Christy Georges was back. Getting the pass on the 121 of Holly Jones, the 44 would work on running down the 9 of Ray as Jimmy Ray looked to steal second for the 131. Trying the high line, the 131 would nearly give the runner up spot away but was able to beat the 9 to the inside line in the close laps but no one was able to keep pace with the 2s as Stormy Scott took to the win. Royal Jones and Jimmy Ray rounded out the podium with Christy Georges taking fourth to earn the 2011 SNM Speedway USRA Western Modified Championship. Holly Jones would round out the top five, earning the runner up spot in the final point standings.
Following the on track interviews, the reason why the 44 quit during the race was revealed as the vinyl cover was removed from the back of the car; showing the battery and cables wrapped in Duct Tape. Without the right size wrench or enough time to properly re-secure the battery cables on the car, the crew used what they had available and in the end, a $3 roll of Duct Tape saved the day.
