The first local track event of the 2010 season was a Play Day last Sunday at SNMS. I was there to take some pictures and get a preview of any new cars that came out to play.
Mercedes Harris was there with her new X-Mod and Dave Deetz brought out his Limited Late Model to get in a little practice before the Tucson race next weekend. I would say they still have a few bugs to work out on that car before it's "Race Ready"!
Fito Gallardo, Bumper Jones, Toby Herring and Martin Robinson all had their A-Mods on the track at various times during the day. I don't know if we'll be seeing more of this, but Vanessa Robinson was spotted at the wheel of the #13 A-Mod for a few laps.
Morgan Wright and Allen Gattis brought out the only two Legends, with Allen's youngest son at the wheel of his first race car, the #14 Legend. A couple of different drivers piloted the #32 Legend of Morgan Wright. I'm not sure Morgan ever got a chance to drive it.
Joe Rodriguez had his #31Jr Street Stock and his latest addition to the Rodriguez stable, the former #15 Street Stock of Brandon Cruse. The only other Street Stock was the #80J out of Alamogordo. Tom Mahle was wrenching the #80J car and told me the driver's name, but unfortunately I forgot. I think it was the son of one of the Super Truck drivers.
Mike and Kathy Hulbert were there with their #3S Winged Sprint. This was the 410 car not the 305, and gave John Carney II some seat time in the faster car. Wes Wofford was also there with his #19 Winged Sprint. With both of those cars on the track at the same time, it was a treat to hear and see two totally different driving styles and methods for getting through the corners.
Finally, a large contingent of Hornets came out to play. Many were from the Mike Mays group out of Truth or Consequences, NM, but there may have been others as well. I don't know all the Hornet drivers as well as the other classes represented but will work on that this season.
It looked like everyone was having a good time except maybe Dave Deetz and company. I'm sure they will get it sorted out, hopefully before the Tucson race! I took a bunch of pictures which will be posted on www.HighDesertVideo.com in a couple of days. There is another Play Day scheduled for SNMS at the end of January and maybe the first weekend in February. Check the SNMS Forum for dates and times.
